Just a 25-minute drive from our apartments in Spišská Sobota lies Levoča – one of the most beautiful historic towns in Slovakia, which will charm every lover of history, art, and a peaceful atmosphere.
Levoča is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Spiš Castle and its surroundings complex. Take a walk through the well-preserved medieval center, which is surrounded by massive town walls, and visit the main square with its numerous Renaissance and Gothic townhouses.
The dominant feature of the town is the Basilica of St. James, the second-largest church in Slovakia, which houses a world unique – the highest Gothic wooden altar in the world, carved by the workshop of Master Paul of Levoča. The interior of the church offers an unforgettable atmosphere and many exceptional works of art.
On the square, you will also be captivated by the historic Town Hall, which today serves as a museum, and the symbol of medieval justice – the Cage of Shame, where misdemeanors were publicly punished in the past.
