HK Poprad is one of the most traditional hockey clubs in Slovakia. Its history dates back to 1930, making it one of the oldest hockey clubs in the country. The club competes in Slovakia’s top league, the Slovak Extraliga, and plays its home games at the Poprad Ice Stadium, which has a capacity of 4,500 spectators.
Thousands of fans regularly attend games throughout the season, and the arena is nearly sold out for exciting matchups. Matches against traditional rivals from Spišská Nová Ves (the Spiš Derby) and Košice (the Eastern Slovakia Derby) are particularly popular. Interestingly, Poprad is all about hockey even during the summer. Every August, the legendary Tatra Cup is held here—the second-oldest international hockey tournament in Europe—which attracts both Slovak and foreign teams every year.
For decades, the town of Svit has been inextricably linked to basketball. Founded in 1946, the Iskra Svit club is one of Slovakia’s most prominent basketball teams and regularly competes in the top-tier Slovak Basketball League.
Home games are played at the Iskra Arena, which is known for its excellent atmosphere. Although it is a smaller arena, it is usually packed during important games, and the fans create an atmosphere that is appreciated even by opponents from across the country. Basketball in Svit is the perfect choice for families and sports enthusiasts alike who want to experience this dynamic sport up close.
Soccer has a long-standing tradition in Poprad and is based at the modern National Training Center (NTC Poprad). This stadium is among the highest-quality soccer facilities in Slovakia and regularly hosts not only FK Poprad matches but also games for Slovakia’s youth national teams, international tournaments, and preseason matches for professional clubs.
The stadium has a capacity of over 3,500 spectators, and thanks to its exceptional location at the foot of the High Tatras, it is one of the most beautiful soccer stadiums in Slovakia. Soccer fans can enjoy matches here in a comfortable, modern setting just a few minutes from the historic center of Spišská Sobota. A unique feature is the heating of the turf using geothermal water that flows from a nearby water park.
Poprad Arena is one of the most modern multipurpose arenas in Slovakia. It is located approximately 3 km from Beňovský Apartments and hosts numerous sporting and cultural events throughout the year.
In 2010, it hosted the FIBA U18 Women’s European Championship. In the past, it has also hosted the futsal extraliga and the women’s basketball extraliga, and it regularly hosts international tournaments, volleyball matches, concerts, and social events. For visitors to Poprad, it is thus an ideal place where they can experience both top-level sports and a high-quality cultural program during their stay.
